5 things to see in Noto: an itinerary in the heart of Sicilian Baroque

Noto is one of the most representative cities of Sicilian Baroque. It is part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, a UNESCO site together with other towns in south-eastern Sicily rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693.

The historic centre is easy to visit on foot, especially along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the city’s main street. Here you will find churches, noble palaces, scenic squares and some of the most photographed views in Sicily.

1. Cathedral of San Nicolò

The Cathedral of San Nicolò is the symbol of Noto. Its grand staircase, monumental façade and dominant position over Piazza Municipio make it an essential stop for anyone visiting the city. It is the perfect starting point for the itinerary, especially at sunset, when the light-coloured stone of the buildings takes on the warm tone typical of Noto’s Baroque architecture.

2. Palazzo Ducezio

Opposite the Cathedral stands Palazzo Ducezio, the seat of Noto’s Town Hall. The building was designed by Vincenzo Sinatra and represents one of the most elegant views in the historic centre. Its position in front of the Cathedral creates one of the city’s most recognisable perspectives.

3. Palazzo Nicolaci and Via Nicolaci

Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata is one of the most important places in Noto. Its Baroque balconies, decorated with grotesque figures, mermaids, lions, sphinxes and winged horses, are among the city’s most photographed architectural details. Via Nicolaci is also linked to the Infiorata di Noto, one of the best-known events of the Sicilian spring.

4. Church of San Carlo al Corso

The Church of San Carlo al Corso is located along Corso Vittorio Emanuele. It is an ideal stop to understand the architectural richness of the historic centre and to see Noto from a different perspective. A visit is recommended during a walk between the Cathedral, Palazzo Ducezio, Palazzo Nicolaci and Porta Reale.

5. Porta Reale and Corso Vittorio Emanuele

Porta Reale is the monumental entrance to the historic centre of Noto. From here begins Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the city’s main promenade.

Along the route you will find churches, historic buildings, cafés, shops and squares. It is the best way to experience Noto slowly, without focusing only on individual monuments.

The 5 things to see in Noto tell the city’s most authentic identity: Baroque architecture, scenic perspectives, noble palaces and a strong Sicilian atmosphere.

Noto can also be visited in just a few hours, but it deserves more time. The best moment is the late afternoon, when the light enhances the golden stone of the historic centre and makes the walk even more suggestive.
